Training prescribed with the rigor of scientific, clinical research.

A recorded intake interview, a protocol with baseline, midpoint, and post assessments, and weekly data that becomes published case reports.

What Penn & Paper does

Fitness training prescription

Personalized athletic conditioning, with progress tracked against objective measures rather than feel alone.

Clinical research and case studies

Each client program runs as a single-case study, with baseline, midpoint, and post-intervention assessments and de-identified results published as case reports, clinical monographs, and white papers.

Literary and scientific publishing

An independent imprint building on eight titles with Nova Science Publishers: research monographs and textbooks first, with fiction to follow.

How it works

From first interview to published case report.

01

Intake interview

A recorded, one-hour conversation over Zoom with Colin and Lacie, working from a set question list: current fitness, training history, pain and how you manage it, movement abilities, and performance goals.

02

Your protocol

The transcript becomes an exercise and performance protocol, drafted with AI and approved by Colin, with baseline, midpoint, and post-intervention assessments you can perform yourself.

03

Weekly journal and analysis

You log a short weekly entry: sleep, nutrition, adherence, body composition, strength, performance, measurements, pain, and how you’re feeling. Colin and Lacie analyze the data, and with your separate written consent, de-identified results become published case reports.

The pushup allows the scapulae to move freely, retracting on the way down and fully protracting at the top. This fully engages the shoulder stabilizers for long-term shoulder safety.

    About and credentials

    Colin G. Pennington, PhD

Founder, Penn & Paper Performance Science · Director of Exercise Science, Gwynedd Mercy University · Chief Research Officer, PHIT Well NYC

PhD, Kinesiology-Sport Pedagogy (Health Promotion), University of Alabama · MS, Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning), University of Texas at Arlington · BA, Kinesiology-Sport Pedagogy, University of Texas at Arlington · Certified personal trainer

Colin came to exercise science as a coach and physical educator and has coordinated kinesiology programs in Iowa, Texas, and New York City. His research covers socialization in kinesiology, physical education teacher training, movement opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and health and wellness advocacy, and he serves as an editor and peer reviewer for academic journals. Penn & Paper brings that work to individual clients: training prescribed from objective measures, and results written up with the same rigor.

    Exercise science background

Strength and conditioning at the master’s level, a doctorate in sport pedagogy, and years coaching and teaching physical education before directing university programs.

    Research pedagogy

A program director and journal editor by trade: clients learn the reasoning behind each training block, not only the block.

    Data-driven methodology

Assessments produce objective measures, programs change when the data say so, and the results become the case reports published here.
